Untie Me

Almost everyone these days has a smartphone.

In fact, the only people I know who don’t, are my parents and my off-the-grid roomie who purposely downgraded to a “dumb” phone several years ago.

Don’t get me wrong I love my smartphone.

With Google in my pocket there’s not a random factoid I can’t find or a place I can’t figure out how to get to.

But, it can get overwhelming.

Sometimes it feels like I can’t get away.

I recently spent the weekend at my cousin’s lake house in New Hampshire.

Among it’s many attributes is the lack of cell coverage.

Or at least it used to be!

Thanks to AT&T, I now have 4G coverage out in the boonies.

Some of you might think I’m bat shit right now.

What’s so bad about having service??

Nothing. If you want to stay connected to the outside world.

But one of the things I love about my home away from home is unplugging.

Most of the time I don’t even bring my charger.

It’s insanely liberating.

Especially for someone who works in social media. Even when I want to cut the ties that bind me, I still have a job to do.

my home away from home 🙂

In our hyper-connected, Facebook obsessed world, not having internet access completely changes your perspective.

If you’re trying to be more mindful, live more fully in the moment, or maybe trying a Happiness Project of your own, I highly recommend unplugging.

Have you ever gone out without your phone?

Did you feel naked?

Or does it make you feel free??

For me it’s a little of Column A, a little from Column B.

generation of idiots einstein quote

We’ve all see that group of friends out to dinner, eyeballs glued to their phones, instead of actually talking to each other.

Don’t be those people.

My Mom has this awesome rule of no phones at her dinner table.

It’s pretty rude when you think about it.

It’s okay to break bread together, but God forbid you have an actual face to face conversation?!

turn off your phone

The next time you’re out, leave your phone at home.

Or if you really can’t be without it, at least turn your ringer off.

The electronic tether is much easier to ignore if you can’t hear it.

It’s the polite thing to do.

Mom said so 🙂

Baby Makin’ Time?

These days it seems like everyone around me is catching the itis.

The baby-itis that is.

Don’t worry! I’m not in any danger.

I have the vaccine, it’s called the Nuva Ring 🙂

Don’t get me wrong!

I love kids!

who wouldn’t love this lil nugget??

They’re awesome little people.

Unless their parents are complete assholes, they’re usually innocent, full of wonder, playful, funny, clever, and uncomfortably honest.

If it weren’t for the incessant questions and the inability to understand sarcasm, they’d be my favorite people.

I especially love kids I get to give back!

It’s not that I never want kids of my own. (Calm down Mom!)

It’s that I want to raise my children.

I want to be there every day for every repetitive question, shame-inducing meltdown, and skinned knee.

who wouldn’t want to take this hot mess out in public??

I was privileged enough to have a Mom who was able to be home while I was growing up and I want my kids to enjoy that same privilege.

I just don’t have it in me to pop out a baby and drop them off at daycare two weeks later.

I applaud women who can do that. Most women don’t have the luxury to be a stay-at-home-mom, especially in this economy.

working mom = wonder woman

I’m just too selfish to do it myself.

And I’m not a 30 year old intern working two jobs because I like to stay busy.

I’m working way too hard pursuing my career right now to take a baby time-out.

But I do worry that by the time I’m ready for kids the window of opportunity to bear my own children will have passed and I’ll forever be the super cool aunt who has disposable income and free time for days.

Where do you stand on kids?

Love ’em?

Hate ’em?

Love the ones that aren’t yours?

That wasn’t the plan!!

I have two jobs, an internship, and a blog.

I work over 6o hours a week and volunteer.

I schedule when to wash my hair.

To be honest, I was like this before the super, crazy schedule, just not as intense.

Some of my favorite people (like my super awesome friend Rachel) go through life flying by the seat of their pants.

It drives my crazy!! But, I love them for it!

Sometimes I wish I could just let go and let whatever happens, happens.

But, I NEED to know what’s going on and when and where I’m expected to be.

It can get a little frustrating, especially when other people don’t realize I’m not just being crazy-anal-retentive-planner Bethany.

I literally need to know exactly how long drinks/dinner/coffee is going to last so I can schedule something immediately after.

It’s kind of hard to explain to family and friends, “No, I’m not avoiding you. I literally have ZERO free time.”

Trust me, I feel like the world’s biggest asshole telling someone I can hang out for an hour and a half, two weeks from next Wednesday!

Do you plan?

Or do you just wing it?
